Biography
Prof. Fiona Costello is Professor of Clinical Neurosciences and Surgery (Ophthalmology) at the University of Calgary and a Clinician Scientist with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. She completed her medical degree and Neurology residency at Memorial University of Newfoundland, followed by a Neuro-Ophthalmology fellowship at the University of Iowa supported by the E.A. Baker Scholarship. Since 2007, Dr. Costello has practiced as a neuro-ophthalmologist in Calgary, specializing in disorders of the visual pathways and central nervous system. Her research focuses on using the eye as a model for brain disorders, including multiple sclerosis, stroke, and compressive lesions. She served as the Roy and Joan Allen Chair in Vision and Visual Sciences (2013–2024) and was appointed Associate Dean of Research (Chairs and Professorships) at the Cumming School of Medicine in 2023. Dr. Costello also serves in leadership and editorial roles within several national and international neurological and neuro-ophthalmology organizations.
